Teeth Extraction Beverly HillsTooth extractions are one of the most commonly performed dental procedures. Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

No one wants to hear they need a tooth removed, but sometimes the decay or damage is too extensive to address with a filling or crown. If the tooth is beyond repair, Dr. Goldy may recommend pulling the tooth. Most people will have their wisdom teeth removed in their teens or 20s if they are poorly positioned or causing pain. Other causes for teeth extractions include:

  • Severe cavity
  • Fractured tooth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Advanced periodontitis (late-stage gum disease)
  • Dental injury
  • Impacted tooth

What Are the Benefits of Dental Extractions?

Teeth extractions can save your remaining teeth from suffering the same fate because the procedure eliminates bacteria and diseased tissues. A decaying tooth left to fester will wreak havoc on your smile and have cascading effects on surrounding teeth and gums. Removing the damaged tooth gives the rest of your mouth a chance for better oral health. For people struggling with dental pain caused by a broken tooth or tooth abscess, teeth extractions provide relief.

What Does the Tooth Extraction Procedure Involve?

Dr. Goldy will assess the damaged tooth and surrounding tissues and take digital dental X-rays to check the extent of decay as well as bone levels. He will review your medical history, current medications or supplements and develop a treatment approach. Tooth extraction may be necessary if the tooth can’t be saved with root canal therapy and a dental crown

Dr. Goldy will often refer to a surgeon to carry out the extraction, especially in cases where sedation may be required, or the placement of a bone graft and/or an implant will accompany the extraction.

A soft food diet is recommended after teeth extractions. Avoid hard and crunchy foods and do not smoke or use straws to prevent drying the socket and slowing the healing process.

Your oral health should improve drastically along with pain levels after tooth extraction for damage or decay. Dental implants and bridges can fill the gap left by the removed tooth.
