Unfortunately, many people still live with silver (mercury) fillings from years ago when they were commonplace. Dr. Goldy can replace old silver fillings with a tooth-colored material to strengthen damaged teeth and improve the appearance of the overall smile.

Dr. Goldy is a leader in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry with a long history of spectacular results. He and our highly trained staff provide a luxurious dentistry experience with little to no pain. Dr. Goldy’s keen eye for aesthetics ensures your tooth-colored filling is virtually undetectable.

Are You a Candidate for Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored restorations work for most people wanting to replace mercury fillings. The composite resin material is considered healthier for dental restorations and strengthens the vulnerable tooth. New and existing patients with tooth decay will receive tooth-colored fillings.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Silver fillings wear down over time as the metal expands and contracts. These restorations contain 50% mercury that can split, leak, corrode and stain natural teeth and gums. It’s often best to replace these with a composite resin material to protect the vulnerable tooth structure.

Composite resin is the newer, safer option for fillings that adheres to the tooth to prevent and protect from decay. These fillings offer a superior fit and contain fluoride for adding protection. Tooth-colored fillings do not have to stretch to the gum line like silver fillings, and the material is mixed to match the shade of your natural teeth for seamless dental work.

What Is Involved with Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Composite resin dental fillingsA filling seals the cavity or hole after tooth decay is removed to prevent more tooth damage, pain and infection. Dr. Goldy will apply a numbing agent on the gums and use a local anesthetic in the tissues, so you’re as comfortable as possible. Using a specialized tool, he will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill it with tooth-colored composite resin. The putty-like material is molded and hardened with a special curing light. Dr. Goldy makes sure the bite feels normal and polishes the tooth.

The process of replacing a silver filling is more extensive and requires two appointments. The first visit removes the old filling along with new damage or decay, then takes an impression of the teeth. A lab uses the model to create a permanent onlay that matches your natural teeth. Dr. Goldy places a temporary onlay to protect the tooth while the restoration is fabricated. Your permanent Emax onlay is fitted at the second appointment. Dr. Goldy cements the restoration and uses high-intensity light to bind it to the tooth before polishing it for a natural appearance.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Your tooth-colored filling or restoration should be difficult to detect when you examine your teeth. The durable material can last 10 to 12 years and provides a natural-looking solution for tooth decay and damage. Someone replacing silver fillings may feel they have a brand-new smile, free from unsightly metal.
