Each February, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good oral health habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
Why is this so important? Neglecting your teeth can lead to other health problems later in life
According to the Mayo Clinic the state of your oral health can offer lots of clues about your overall health. Gum disease can let bacteria enter your bloodstream and wreak havoc elsewhere in your body. Sometimes, signs of a disease may first show up in your mouth.
Here are some of the diseases and conditions that may be linked to oral health:
- Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health.
- Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregnant woman's mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth.
- Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections.
- Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss may show up in your teeth. Your dentist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers.
Just a few simple steps can help you to smile confidently for many years to come: Brush your teeth twice a day. Make sure you brush for about 2 minutes each time. Change your toothbrush every 3 months. When the seasons change, so should you!
Healthy teeth require healthy gums so make sure you care for your gums by:
- Paying particular attention to where the tooth meets the gum
- Cleaning between the teeth using floss or interdental brushes
- Avoid sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Try some seasonal fruit instead; fresh Apples in Autumn; Kiwis or Clementines in Winter; Apricots or peaches in Spring and Strawberries in Summer
- Be sure to visit your dentist regularly. You should have a visit planned every time you leave even just for a check up in a few months time. A regular check up will keep your mouth feeling fresh and clean.
